Georgia man charged with operating a riding lawn mower on a highway while consuming alcohol

A man from Georgia was arrested after he was apprehended for riding a lawn mower under the influence of alcohol.

On April 30, deputies from Oconee County noticed Willie Laguines, 64, riding a lawn mower on Highway 186 westbound near Payne Road, prompting them to make a stop.

Deputies observed Laguines as he set down a black can from his mouth and veered the lawn mower off the road.

Laguines was questioned by authorities about his presence on the road, to which he explained that he was simply trying to make his way back home. According to the sheriff’s office, he informed deputies that he had recently left Golden Pantry.

Deputies reported that Laguines had the scent of alcohol on his breath and there was a bag resting by his feet on the lawnmower.

According to the report, Laguines allegedly discarded the beer can on the side of the road. He proceeded to present the deputies with the remaining cans of beer in the bag.

According to the OCSO, Laguines informed the deputies that he had driven to Golden Pantry 15 minutes prior to being pulled over. He stated that he had consumed only one beer.

Laguines pleaded with the deputies, urging them to give him a chance and assuring them that he had been in a similar situation before.

According to officials, Laguines informed deputies that he had been struck by a car in 2024 while operating his lawnmower on the road.

The individual was taken into custody and accused of driving under the influence of alcohol (less safe), possessing an open container, and violating low-speed vehicle regulations. They were subsequently incarcerated at the Oconee County Jail.
