Georgia Bureau of Investigation probing the death of a New York man in custody

Mocobizscene- The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is currently investigating the death of a 32-year-old shoplifting suspect who was taken into custody by Cumming Police Officers over the weekend.

According to officials from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), a call was received by Forsyth County 911 on Sunday, February 11. The call was made by Cumming Target Loss Prevention regarding a shoplifter who had been reported at two Target stores. The suspect has been identified as Robert Cornelious Powell, a 32-year-old individual from Brooklyn, New York.

The GBI reported that upon the arrival of Cumming police officers at the store, Powell promptly fled on foot, prompting a pursuit by the officers. After a chase through the woods, Powell ultimately surrendered. The release mentioned that Powell was apprehended “without incident,” however, during the process of handcuffing him, officers noticed an injury on his leg.

After conducting the investigation, the release mentioned that the case will be sent to the Forsyth County District Attorney’s Office for review.
