George Santos, former congressman, announces his departure from the Republican Party

Former Rep. George Santos announced on Friday that he is parting ways with the Republican Party.

In light of a midnight deadline to prevent a partial shutdown, President X has made an announcement following the House’s approval of a substantial $1.2 trillion spending package. This package ensures the government’s funding through September.

The measure was approved with a vote of 286 to 134, despite opposition from the majority of Republicans. Following its passage, Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia took action by filing a “motion to vacate,” which sets the stage for a future vote to remove House Speaker Mike Johnson.

“After witnessing the disappointing performance in the house today, I have taken the time to reflect and come to the conclusion that I can no longer align myself with the Republican Party. The continuous deception and manipulation of its voter base by the party have left me with a heavy conscience. I cannot, in good faith, associate with a party that lacks principles and easily succumbs to any influence. As a result, I have made the decision to suspend my petitioning in #NY01 to access the ballot as a Republican and instead, I will be filing to run as an independent candidate. In the upcoming November elections, I will proudly bring my unwavering support for Ultra MAGA/Trump values to the ballot as an Independent,” shared Santos on X.

Santos had already made it known that he intends to run against Republican Rep. Nick LaLota in New York’s First Congressional District, encompassing eastern Long Island.

In response, LaLota issued a statement affirming her commitment to elevating the standards in Congress. She also emphasized the importance of holding accountable individuals who engage in deceitful behavior and illegitimately win elections. LaLota took the lead in the effort to expel George Santos, whom she described as a pathological liar. In order to ensure that justice is served, LaLota expressed her willingness to defeat Santos in a primary election if necessary.

Santos is currently facing 23 federal charges, including alleged wire fraud, identity theft, campaign finance violations, and other crimes. His trial is scheduled for September.
