A teacher’s body was discovered on the side of a Florida turnpike, possibly after being ejected from a vehicle; her family seeks answers while her community mourns her passing.
On Christmas Eve, Shakira Shanay Mozie, 34, was last seen returning home from a holiday party in West Park; however, she did not show up. Although she had exited the party in her white SUV, she did not operate the vehicle. The Broward County Sheriff’s Office reports in a press release that her remains were discovered at approximately 7:00 p.m. on the Florida Turnpike the same day.
BSO added in its release, “Preliminary investigation findings indicate the victim sustained injuries that are consistent with a fall from a moving vehicle, as reported by detectives.” Detectives have reportedly questioned the sole other identified occupant of the vehicle, who has been identified as Mozie’s fiancé, as of today.
According to WPLG News, Mozie formerly taught at the Discovery Elementary School in Sunrise and is the parent of a 10-year-old daughter. Sheldon Mozie, the daughter’s father, expressed his profound sorrow to the news organization and pondered, “Why would someone abandon my daughter like a dog on the side of the road?”
Two weeks have passed since Mozie’s death, and there have been no developments concerning suspected foul play. Many community members attended a candlelight vigil in her honour on December 29, donning “Justice For Shakira” t-shirts. Mozie’s demise is still under investigation by BSO detectives. A response to The Messenger’s inquiry regarding the status of that investigation has not yet been received.
According to Connie Smith-Lindsey, the great-aunt of Mozie, delaying an arrest is acceptable so long as the perpetrator is brought to justice (NBC6).
“While there are speculations, what is important is to gather the facts to get a guilty verdict,” Smith-Lindsey added. “Something malevolent, destructive, self-centred, and narcissistic transpired between the Christmas celebration and the Florida Turnpike.” I wish to await the conclusion of the investigation to obtain the guilty verdict that would be necessary to incarcerate the individual or individuals responsible.
Mozie will be laid to rest on Saturday, following which a visitation will be held on Friday. The funeral home of Eric S. George is encouraging the public to place condolences for her family on its website, where it also promotes the purchase of floral tributes for her funeral service. An online flower delivery link can be found in the official obituary of Mozie.
