Florida Man Convicted of Multiple Felonies Receives 30-Year Prison Sentence

Mocobizscene- A man from Miami has been handed a 30-year federal prison sentence, along with five years of supervised release, for illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition. This conviction follows his guilty verdict in October 2023, which deemed him an armed career criminal.

During the trial and sentencing, it was proven that Demetris Kewan Mackie, a 29-year-old resident of Miami, Florida, was in possession of a firearm and used it to shoot at two victims within an eight-day period. One of the victims sustained injuries as a result.

In a span of three days, the North Miami Beach Police Department (NMBPD) swiftly responded to yet another shooting incident. Thankfully, in this instance, the victim remained unharmed and was able to positively identify Mackie as the assailant.

On April 20, 2023, Mackie was apprehended by MDPD officers. During the arrest, Mackie was found in possession of a silver-topped firearm. Upon conducting tests, it was determined that the casings from the gun matched the casings recovered from both shooting incidents.

U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe of the Southern District of Florida, alongside Special Agent in Charge Christopher A. Robinson of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), Miami Field Division, have announced the sentence handed down by U.S. District Judge Rodolfo A. Ruiz II.

The case was investigated by the ATF Miami Field Office, with assistance from the MDPD and NMBPD. The prosecution of the case was led by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Zachary A. Keller and Vanessa Bonhomme.
