Family of Secoriea Turner establishes scholarship in honor of 8-year-old who died during 2020 demonstrations

The memory of an 8-year-old girl who was tragically shot and killed during protests in 2020 will be honored through a scholarship set up by her family.

On July 4, 2020, Secoriea Turner tragically lost her life in a shooting while riding in a car with her mother. The incident occurred in the vicinity of Wendy’s on University Ave, where armed groups had established blockades following the fatal shooting of Rayshard Brooks.

Turner’s family and members of the community introduced Secoriea’s Social Justice Scholarship on Friday. This scholarship will provide financial assistance to college students who have a passion for bringing about change.

In collaboration with Black Women’s Lab, Let Us Make Man, and Black Man Lab nonprofits, the scholarship program has been established.

At the press conference, community members along with representatives from various nonprofits came forward with a pledge to donate towards the scholarship fund. The collective effort resulted in a total contribution of $10,000.

In a statement, a representative from Black Women’s Lab expressed their pride in supporting Secoriea’s Social Justice Scholarship. The scholarship aims to assist young women who are committed to achieving justice and equity in their educational pursuits. The organization hopes to empower these women to become strong advocates for their communities in honor of Secoriea.
