DC CVS store forced to shut down after repeated thefts and constant stocking issues

A group of sticky-fingered teens has regularly plundered a CVS store in Washington DC, causing the shelves to be constantly stripped of goods. As a result, the store will now be closing its doors.

The pharmacy storefront in Washington D.C’s Columbia Heights neighborhood is set to close on February 29, as reported by Fox affiliate WTTG-TV.

In October 2023, videos emerged depicting empty shelves at the CVS store, following a chaotic incident where a group of shoplifting teens wreaked havoc. Consequently, months later, the store is now closing its doors.

CVS is making a cost-cutting move by closing several Target pharmacies. This decision will result in the closure of dozens of locations. Customers have started shopping at other CVS locations for necessities due to the increasing incidence of theft at this particular store.

Ilana Miller, a CVS customer, expressed her dissatisfaction with the store, stating that it makes her not want to shop there. She mentioned that she only goes there to pick up her prescription, but when she needs other items, she prefers to shop elsewhere because CVS lacks a variety of products. Ilana Miller shared this feedback in an interview with WTTG-TV.

Store employees report that on a regular basis, 45 or more children come into the store to pilfer chips and drinks during various times of the day – before school, after school, and even late at night.

CVS is making a significant move to increase transparency in its drug-pricing model. The company is taking this step amidst growing concerns and scrutiny over the high cost of medications.

CVS employees claim that the teenage thieves are well-informed about the arrival of new shipments and strategically choose the most opportune time to target the store.

According to Fox 5, there have been reports of street vendors allegedly hiring individuals to steal merchandise for the purpose of reselling it. The news station observed street vendors selling items that were previously stocked on the now vacant pharmacy shelves.

As I walked along the streets near CVS, I couldn’t help but notice the various items being sold by street vendors. Toothbrushes, body wash for both men and women, car fresheners, as well as laundry and cleaning supplies, were all on display. The bustling atmosphere and the array of products made it clear that these vendors were catering to the needs of the local community.

Reports of robbery have seen a significant increase of 68% in 2023 compared to the previous year, 2022. According to data from the Metropolitan Police Department, there have been 1,395 cases of property crime reported in 2024, compared to 1,615 cases during the same period in 2023.

In 2023, there were a total of 3,470 reported cases of robberies.
