According to the Storm Team4 forecast, the region will likely experience a deluge of rain, with an estimated rainfall accumulation of 1 to 3 inches during this period. Although significant snowfall is not expected, residents are advised to prepare for inclement weather.
As the storm intensifies, a flood watch has been issued for parts of D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. Earlier today, drivers were warned about dense fog that covered the area, greatly reducing visibility. Clay Anderson, a meteorologist from Storm Team4, described the conditions as “pea soup.” Dulles International Airport reported visibility dropping from a half-mile to zero around 7 a.m.
Expect the rain to increase gradually after the fog clears, with the downpour picking up speed after sunset. Anderson cautioned that the strong winds accompanying the storm could lead to power outages and advised residents to stay vigilant.
The weather forecast for mid-December indicates that temperatures will remain relatively warm, with overnight temperatures hovering around 50°F.
The weather forecast for Sunday predicts that the heaviest rainfall and strong winds will peak at around 4 p.m. and continue throughout the night until early Monday morning. While most models indicate that there will be approximately 2 inches of rain, some outlier forecasts suggest up to 3 inches, which is quite unusual for December. Although it may be unlikely to break historical records, this storm is expected to be one of the record’s top five or six rainiest December days.
In addition, Monday is unlikely to bring relief from the weather alert, as strong winds are expected to continue. While the rain is expected to lessen in the early morning, strong gusts of wind, reaching almost 40 mph, will persist throughout the afternoon. Although there is a slight possibility of snowfall, it is not expected to cause major disruptions like those experienced last Monday.
After the storm passes, we can expect a period of cold and dry weather for most of the upcoming week. Fortunately, the outlook for Christmas travel looks promising as dry conditions are expected in the days leading up to the holiday. We can anticipate partial sunshine on Christmas Eve with temperatures ranging from 34 to 50 degrees.
