Colorado legislator accidentally leaves loaded 9mm Glock unattended in capitol restroom

State Representative Don Wilson made a careless mistake when he accidentally left a loaded, 9mm Glock handgun in a bathroom at the Colorado State Capitol. This incident occurred just as a bill was being discussed to ban firearms in sensitive areas, including the Rotunda.

The Colorado State Patrol, in charge of Capitol security, uncovered a semiautomatic firearm on the shelf of a single-occupancy unisex restroom. Building staff stumbled upon the weapon at approximately 9:30 p.m. and promptly alerted the State Troopers. According to a CSP statement, the firearm had been left unattended for 23 minutes before being discovered by janitorial staff.

In a written statement posted on X, the former Twitter CEO, Wilson expressed his full and complete accountability for the incident. He emphasized the importance of being clear about his responsibility.

“I deeply regret my mistake and offer my sincere apologies. The importance of firearm safety cannot be overstated, and I am fully aware of this. I humbly acknowledge my error and pledge to reinforce my dedication to responsible handling practices.”

Law enforcement concluded that the weapon posed no legal violation and that there were no pending criminal charges against Wilson. As a result, the weapon was returned to him.

State Representative Julie McCluskie emphasized the pressing need for legislation prohibiting firearms, citing the situation as a clear illustration of its importance.

According to the Democratic lawmaker, leaving a firearm unattended in a public space could have serious consequences.
