CDC Director to Visit Grady Center and Unveil Fresh Guidelines on Preventing STIs

The release of new clinical guidance for a tool to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted infections is imminent from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC has announced that Dr. Mandy Cohen, the CDC Director, will be visiting the Grady Health System’s Ponce De Leon Center on Wednesday afternoon as part of a planned update. During her visit, she will meet with Atlanta health partners who play a crucial role in providing essential care to the community.

On Wednesday, a new guidance will be released, which is centered around doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis, also known as doxy PEP. This medication is utilized after sexual intercourse to prevent specific bacterial sexually transmitted infections.

According to the CDC, the treatment is specifically targeted towards chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis – all of which have been experiencing a rise in infection rates throughout the United States.
