Cancer-stricken Texas Boy Recognized with Louisiana Honor

According to KTAL, a 12-year-old boy from Houston, Texas has recently been sworn in as a member of the Mansfield Police Department in Louisiana. This opportunity will allow him to effectively spread his message and work towards achieving his goals.

Devarjay “DJ” Daniel, a young boy, is currently fighting against an incurable brain and spinal cancer. His father, Theodis Daniel, reveals that DJ has already undergone 13 brain surgeries and is now dealing with advanced cataracts.

DJ had the brilliant idea to set a goal of getting sworn in by 100 police and sheriff’s departments. However, the dream grew even bigger when they achieved the 100 mark rapidly, with numerous departments eagerly offering their assistance.

The stage was set at the Mansfield City Council meeting, where the council and the Chief of Police, Chris Johnson, and Assistant Chief of Police, Michelle Johnson, gathered to oversee the swearing-in of DJ.

Mayor Thomas Jones describes it as the most heartfelt meeting he has ever presided over. He expresses that it was an exceptional day for their city.

Upon his swearing-in, the young man was presented with a new badge, an officer’s uniform tailored to his size, and a commission card courtesy of the department.

In an interview with KTAL, Police Chief Christopher Johnson shared,

With DJ, you know that is heart-touching. A young man wants to be in law enforcement at his age, you know that’s also, like I said, a testament on top of a blessing. With his rare condition and still wants to push through and be an officer, you know that’s, you know I still have a little bit of goosebumps about that.

Young DJ has been sworn into 821 agencies, according to his dad, as they embark on various trips to departments. And they have no plans of stopping anytime soon. More exciting adventures are scheduled for Arizona, California, and their home state of Texas.

DJ confidently stated, “I will keep going until I run out of fuel. Only when God summons me home, will I stop.”

Why Did Theodis and DJ Choose Mansfield?

Their family hails from Mansfield.

Theodis Daniel explained that they reached out to the Mansfield Police Department due to the unfortunate connection the city has with his family.

Theodis reveals that his family resided in the town during the 1900s. However, they were compelled to leave after one of his uncles fell victim to a lynching incident. Reflecting on the injustice, Theodis remarks, “….and they even created a postcard that made its way across the entire country.”

The community, council, and police department have joined forces to support DJ Daniel.
