Baptist pastor and Alabama mayor commits suicide when transgender photographs surface online

On Friday, an Alabama mayor and Baptist pastor tragically took his own life after pictures of him wearing women’s clothing were published on a website.

According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, F.L. “Bubba” Copeland, the Mayor of Smiths Station, tragically took his own life in the presence of sheriff’s deputies. It’s worth noting that Copeland was also serving as the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Phenix City.

Deputies have reported that the shooting took place around 5 p.m. on Friday. Deputies were contacted to check on Copeland, who was found in a vehicle. He proceeded to lead the police on a low-speed pursuit. After stopping the car, he got out and displayed a firearm, before turning it on himself, as per reports from the deputies.

After 1819 News released photos of Copeland sporting women’s clothing and heavy makeup, the incident occurred. The pastor expressed remorse for any discomfort that his personal life may have caused and asserted that the article was simply a malicious internet slander against him. He vowed on Wednesday that he would not allow it to alter his life.
