According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, first responders dedicated their night in Kyiv to sifting through the debris at the children’s hospital and other locations hit by Russian missiles on Monday.
On Tuesday, he took to social media to provide an update on the rescue efforts following the recent Russian missile attack. He expressed his condolences to the families and friends of those affected by the tragedy, as 38 people, including four children, have been reported dead so far.
According to Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the missile strike on the Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital in Kyiv resulted in the transfer of 94 children, with eight of them sustaining injuries. The children were moved to other hospitals for treatment and care. The information was shared by the mayor on the messaging app Telegram.
As the rescue efforts in Kyiv persisted, NATO countries and Ukrainian allies were quick to condemn Russia for their “horrendous” and “barbaric” strikes. This extensive aerial attack occurred on the eve of a NATO summit in Washington, D.C.
Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary General, has strongly condemned Russia’s actions, denouncing the missile attacks on Ukrainian cities as “horrendous”. He expressed his anguish over the loss of innocent lives, including children, in these attacks.
According to a press release from Stoltenberg’s office, NATO members will decide on ways to enhance the alliance’s aid for Ukraine during the Washington summit.
In response to the deadly missile attacks in Ukraine, President Joe Biden expressed his dismay and condemned Russia’s brutality. He emphasized the importance of standing in solidarity with Ukraine, especially with the upcoming NATO summit where the ongoing conflict will be a central issue. The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of war and the need for continued global efforts to promote peace and stability.
During a recent address, President Biden emphasized the unbreakable support for Ukraine and stated that he will convey this message to President Zelenskyy. He also announced that NATO leaders will be introducing new measures to enhance Ukraine’s air defenses.
David Lammy, the U.K. foreign secretary, expressed his condolences by saying, “All the victims and their loved ones are in my thoughts.” He reinforced the U.K.’s unwavering support to Ukraine, stating that it is iron-clad. Lammy emphasized that those responsible for Putin’s illegal war must be held accountable.
French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné vehemently criticized Russia’s missile strikes, denouncing them as “barbaric” and “war crimes.” He urged Ukraine’s allies to intensify their support for the besieged nation.
On social media, Séjourné stated in French that it is crucial for Russia not to emerge victorious in this war.
According to preliminary findings by the Security Service of Ukraine, the recent attack has been deemed a “war crime” and is now under criminal investigation. The agency has reported that the site was hit by a Russian Kh-101 missile.
During a visit to the hospital site, Martin Jaeger, the German ambassador to Ukraine, witnessed a distressing scene. He observed young cancer and dialysis patients sitting on the sidewalk alongside their mothers. This sight was disheartening and highlights the need for proper medical care for these vulnerable individuals.
In a post on social media, he wrote in German, “The civilian population is under attack in this war. Russia’s claim to be ready for negotiations and seeking peace is contradicted by their actions.”
In a statement, the German Prime Minister expressed unwavering support for the Ukrainian people, particularly during these challenging times.
On Tuesday, President Zelenskyy reported that over 400 individuals were actively engaged in rescue operations throughout the night at the Kyiv children’s hospital and other locations.
According to him, the tragic incident claimed the lives of four innocent children out of the 38 people who lost their lives. He also mentioned that around 190 individuals were receiving medical treatment for their injuries all over the country.
Zelenskyy affirmed that their efforts to enhance the safety and security of their cities and communities against Russian terrorism are ongoing. He mentioned that decisions will be made and expressed confidence that the world has the strength to take necessary actions.
