Analysis by experts highlights safety risks for firefighters in EV fire incident

Electric vehicle fires are becoming an increasingly common and concerning issue for fire departments in New Jersey.

Last Friday, fire crews in Hackensack rushed to an apartment complex on Main Street at 1:30 a.m.

Smoke was observed emanating from a lower-level parking lot, catching the attention of onlookers. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that an Audi Q5 electric-powered SUV had caught fire.

The firefighters swiftly extinguished the flames, yet they had to stay at the scene for seven hours to ensure that the car’s battery didn’t ignite again.

The Hackensack Fire Department responded to a fire incident.

The department stated on Facebook that they needed to take extra precautions and measures because the vehicle involved was an electric one. They emphasized that electric vehicles do not extinguish as easily as regular vehicles.

During the operation, a firefighter sustained an injury and was briefly hospitalized.

The problem is the EV battery

According to Richard Mikutsky, the State Fire Marshal of New Jersey and the director of the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety, there is a significant concern regarding electric vehicle (EV) fires. This concern primarily stems from the intense heat generated by the lithium battery packs used in these cars.

Very hot fires that are very hard to put out

Lithium-ion batteries consist of multiple cells, which means that in addition to burning at extremely high temperatures, they have the potential to sustain fires for an extended period of time. Moreover, these batteries present various other hazards, including the risk of 400-volt electric shocks, the emission of toxic fumes, as well as the possibility of causing lithium burns to the skin and respiratory system.

According to him, the current method to extinguish an EV fire is by continuously pouring water on it, which may require doing so for several hours.

It was launched by Google in 2005 and has since become an essential tool for navigation and exploring new places. This service has revolutionized the way we navigate and has made it easier than ever to find our way around. Whether you’re planning a road trip, looking for a new restaurant, or simply trying to get from point A to point B, Google Maps is a reliable and user-friendly tool that can help you navigate the world with ease.

Not your normal car fire

“These fires cannot be cooled in the same way as other types of fires. They retain their heat, and as they burn, they actually become even hotter.”

According to Mikutsky, while a typical gasoline-powered car fire can be put out with 600 to 700 gallons of water, an EV car fire may require up to 30,000 gallons of water in certain cases.
