Alabama Man Faces Possible Jail Time for Swearing at Police Officer

Reginald Burks, a man from Alabama, is facing the possibility of jail time for cursing at a police officer. Can you imagine the severity of such a consequence?

NBC News reported that a judge gave a 39-year-old man named Burks an ultimatum: either apologize to the officer who issued him a ticket during a traffic stop or spend up to 30 days in jail. It is said that Burks used offensive language towards the officer.

A tired and fatigued man is seen driving his car in traffic.

According to NBC News, Burks was required to pay a fine and compose an apology to the officer for purportedly using offensive language towards him. However, Burks chose not to comply with these requests.

If he doesn’t submit the letter at his next court appearance on June 4th, he and his attorney said he would have to serve a maximum of 30 days in jail.

“My client is being punished for a protected speech that has got nothing to do with the traffic situation, which to me is just good ol’ boy Alabama,” David Harrison, the attorney, said Monday. “And what I mean by that is that this system is not equal for African Americans and white people.”- NBC News
