A woman confessed to police that she started a fire in her Independence apartment on June 17th.

Destiny Kley faces a charge of first-degree arson in Jackson County Court for the fire that caused damage to multiple units in the Independence Towers Apartment complex.

The court has set Kley’s bond at a cash-only amount of $50,000. As of now, there is no confirmed court date for the case.

Upon arriving at 728 N. Jennings, Independence firefighters were met with the aftermath of a fire that had caused significant water damage to the first floor of the 11-story apartment building.

According to court documents, the ceiling on the second floor of the building suffered considerable smoke damage.

At the time of the fire, 83 out of the 122 units in the building were already rented.

According to a court document, the basement, first, and second floors of the building were inspected by city officials who subsequently condemned them due to the damage.

Upon feeling unwell, Kley sought medical attention and was subsequently admitted to a hospital for treatment and care.

According to the police department’s investigator, she admitted to destroying everything in their apartment after consuming the entire bottle of vodka.

According to a court document, Kley was reported to have broken various glass items, overturned furniture, and tossed her husband’s belongings out of a window.

During the investigation, the woman admitted to pouring cleaning liquid on the kitchen floor and around the stove, as well as turning on the stove knobs before sitting on the couch.
