81-Year-Old Steps Out of Her Comfort Zone to Witness Eclipse with Son, Igniting a New Found Passion

In October 2023, a man named Reuben and his dog Squiggy set out to view a solar eclipse near Zion National Park in Utah. Despite it being outside of her comfort zone, Reuben’s mom made the decision to join them, even though tent camping was not something she was accustomed to.

Reuben enjoys spending a great deal of time outdoors and sharing his exciting experiences on TikTok. In one of his posts, he shares a bit of background information about his mother. At the age of 18, she left her family farm in Mexico to start a new life in the United States. Reuben recalls that she went camping only once, about 40 years ago, and although he was just a child at the time, he believes she didn’t really enjoy it. Now, at the age of 81, tent camping would be a completely new and different experience for her.

After they had set up camp and settled in, the trio gathered around a cozy campfire and enjoyed each other’s company before going to bed. Reuben mentioned that his mom managed to get some decent sleep on their first night out. Throughout the day, despite feeling a bit anxious, she made an effort to engage in activities that brought her joy. She found solace in saying her morning prayers beneath the shade of a majestic tree and even took the time to feed the friendly local wasps. Reuben couldn’t help but chuckle when he caught his mom spontaneously breaking into song and dance.

Excited to witness the solar eclipse, the mother and son eagerly put on their protective glasses and comfortably positioned themselves for the spectacular event.

After the camping trip came to an end, Reuben’s mom confessed that she had actually enjoyed herself quite a bit. However, she expressed her hesitation towards going camping in a tent again. Nevertheless, she did mention that she would be open to more adventures, as long as she could sleep in a van instead.
