On Tuesday, the Ohio Division of Cannabis Control had granted provisional licenses to 80 cannabis dispensaries that are seeking to sell both medical and adult-use marijuana. This includes 26 dispensaries located in Northeast Ohio.
The dual-use licenses currently held by dispensaries are only temporary and do not authorize them to begin selling their products to the general public. Before they can open for business, these establishments must complete additional regulatory steps, which could delay their ability to serve non-medical customers. As a result, it remains unclear when local dispensaries will be able to sell products to the broader consumer market.
Ohio’s Division of Cannabis Control is currently in the process of inspecting dispensaries to ensure they meet all requirements before issuing a certificate of operation for the sale of recreational marijuana. One of these requirements includes the implementation of a point-of-sale system that can distinguish between medical and non-medical cannabis sales, as well as accurately charge the state’s 10% excise tax.
According to James Crawford, spokesperson for the division, the certificates will be given to dispensaries in the order their applications were received. However, no certificates have been issued yet.
According to the given criteria, it’s essential to note that there won’t be a specific day designated for the commencement of sales. The licenses will be issued, and it will be the retailer’s discretion to decide the sales initiation date, taking into account factors such as staffing, stock availability, and other considerations. As per the Medical Marijuana Control Program’s groundwork, applicants who already possess medical permits and are eligible for dual-use status are predicted to receive licenses more expeditiously in the summer, having undergone many of the extensive checks already.
By September 7th, qualified shops must receive certificates from the state as per the guidelines mentioned in the newly implemented legal cannabis statute.
In November, Ohio voters gave their approval to Issue 2, which now permits individuals aged 21 and above to possess up to 2 1/2 ounces of cannabis flower and 15 grams of extract. Additionally, Ohio residents are now permitted to cultivate up to six cannabis plants within their household, or up to 12 plants if there are two or more adults residing in the same home.
Local communities have the option to decline the establishment of new adult-use cannabis businesses within their jurisdiction, as stated by the law. Even though new dispensaries are emerging in the state, a minimum of 56 communities in Ohio have imposed moratoriums or permanent bans.
