New information in the murder case of a former Alabama prison sergeant

ELMORE COUNTY, Ala. – A former employee of the Alabama Department of Corrections, D’Marcus Sanders, has been charged with murder along with two inmates, Frederick Gooden and Stefranio Hampton.

They are accused of beating Rubyn Murray, another inmate, to death. Sanders was a sergeant at the Elmore Correctional.

Facility but resigned after his arrest. The Alabama Dept. of Corrections did not provide details about Sanders’ involvement at the time of his arrest. However, new court documents reveal that Sanders escorted Gooden and Hampton to the back gate of the facility and unlocked Murray’s cell.

The co-defendants attacked and beat Murray, causing serious injuries and resulting in his death. The reason for this altercation is not mentioned in the deposition.

Rubyn Murray was serving a 20-year sentence for first-degree robbery out of Montgomery County. Gooden, 60, is serving a 30-year sentence for second-degree theft of property out of Jefferson County, while Hampton, 35, is serving a life sentence for first-degree robbery out of Montgomery County.

All three defendants are being held without bail.
