A man was detained with several substances and an AR-15-style rifle

PELHAM – On August 5th, Pelham police detained a 41-year-old Wetumpka man named Thomas Courson near Circle K on Cahaba Valley Road.

Courson was allegedly in possession of multiple drugs and an AR-15-style rifle. He had 4.38 grams of psilocybin mushrooms, 21.81 grams of clonazepam, and 1.47 grams of methamphetamine on him.

However, the amounts of these drugs were not enough to prove “intent to distribute.” Therefore, Courson was only charged with three counts of drug possession.

In addition to the aforementioned drugs, Courson had an unspecified amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, including a marijuana grinder, glass pipe, burnt spoon, and syringes, all of which contained unspecified drug residue.

The police also found an AR-15-style rifle in Courson’s possession. These rifles can fire around 45 bullets per minute and are often linked with the ongoing national debate on gun control and regulation laws.

As an alleged drug addict, it is illegal for Courson to have a firearm in his possession. Currently, Courson is being held at the Shelby County Jail on a combined bond of $18,000.

The bond can be broken down into the following charges and amounts.

three counts of illegal possession of a controlled drug totaling $15,000

-$1,000 for illegal marijuana possession

-$1,000 for possession of drug paraphernalia

-Drunk/addict in possession of a $1,000 handgun

This matter is currently being investigated, and more information will be shared as it becomes available.
