MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Almost four years after his arrest, a Montgomery man has pleaded guilty in a homicide case.
Shariko Dejuan Smith, 23, has pled guilty to murder in the shooting death of Marcus “Dale” Martin, 30, according to the Montgomery County district attorney’s office.
Martin was murdered on April 30, 2019. On August 29, 2019, Smith was arrested on an initial accusation of capital murder.
Smith faces up to 99 years in jail, according to District Attorney Daryl Bailey, because he pleaded to the lesser offence. On September 26, he will be sentenced by Judge James Anderson. Despite his team’s plea that he be brought into custody, Bailey said Smith would stay free on bail until that hearing.
Bailey explained the case in the plea announcement, adding that evidence proved Martin had invited Smith to his flat, where they got into an argument. Bailey claimed Smith pulled a revolver on Martin and shot him multiple times as he tried to flee.
According to the affidavit, Smith also stole stuff before fleeing.
“To shoot and kill someone in cold blood in their own home is truly despicable,” Bailey said. “My office is dedicated to making sure Shariko Smith’s sentence reflects the consequences of committing this senseless, violent crime. We will do everything in our power to make sure justice is served for Mr. Martin and his loved ones.”
