BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham police were on high alert Saturday after receiving a poster urging fights in City Walk.
There was no violence at City Walk on Saturday, but the flier on social media raised concerns for many individuals.
Oscar Williams stated that he frequents the city walk. He was concerned about a social media flyer advocating fighting at City Walk.
“I actually thought it was another event,” Williams explained. “But I saw it was just people like ruining the fun, and I don’t understand why they would want to do that because it was pretty cool and nice, so I don’t get it.”
Some local businesses that declined to be interviewed expressed concern about the message sent by the flyer. Saturday, Birmingham police patrolled City Walk to ensure that no fighting occurred.
“Whatever their motives were behind it, we have our own motives on how we’re going to handle it,” Birmingham Police Department spokesperson Truman Fitzgerald said. “And we’re not going to handle that any way but the way we’re doing it, and we’re going to pump as any resources as we can to make sure City Walk is safe for everyone.”
More community activities, according to one person, are needed to change the minds of those who wish to fight downtown.
“If you have things to bring people out and experience and show things going on downtown, then they will have a better understanding of how peaceful it really is,” Courtney Patterson said.
Birmingham police advise parents not to drop their children off at City Walk and to stay with them at all times.
