On Thursday night, tragedy struck as a single-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 63 claimed the lives of two individuals who were residents of Columbia. Our hearts go out to their loved ones during this difficult time.
According to the Columbia police, Giovanny Ezequiel Blanco Rodriguez, aged 21, was declared dead at the scene of the incident, while Abran Ramirex Morales, aged 27, passed away later at a nearby hospital.
The collision occurred in the early evening of Thursday, right around 7 p.m., specifically at the vicinity of the Highway 63 connector and the Interstate 70 overpass.
According to an investigation conducted by the CPD’s Traffic Unit, it was discovered that Rodriguez was driving a 2006 Mazda Tribute in the driving lane on Highway 63 when the vehicle suddenly lost control. The car veered into the passing lane, crossed over the median, and eventually ended up on the southbound lanes of Highway 63. The police were able to find the vehicle and investigate the incident.
On the west side of the road, the vehicle ended up coming to a stop while turned upside down.
According to the authorities, the vehicle’s three occupants, including Rodriguez and Morales, were thrown out of the car during the accident. Shockingly, none of them had their seatbelts on at the time of the crash.
The individual sitting in the front seat sustained injuries and required hospitalization for medical attention.
Boone County Joint Communications reported that a portion of the highway was closed for almost four hours due to the crash.
Upon receiving the report, the maintenance crews of the Missouri Department of Transportation swiftly took action and were joined by the EMS team from MU Health Care and the Columbia Fire Department. The CPD also arrived on the scene to assist with the situation.
