Two individuals shot during NYC parade, while the traditionally violent J’Ouvert festival remains incident-free.

The West Indian Day Carnival parade route in Brooklyn had at least two people shot on Monday. However, it’s worth noting that the J’Ouvert festival, which has historically been known for its violence, remained violence-free for the second consecutive year. Mayor Eric Adams praised the police for ensuring safety during both events.

The West Indian American Day Carnival took place in Crown Heights, spanning across Eastern Parkway. The event started at 11 a.m. and remained peaceful until an unfortunate incident occurred at around 4:20 p.m. According to authorities and police sources, a man seemed to have shot himself in the leg during a dispute near Franklin Avenue on Eastern Parkway. Despite the incident, the overall atmosphere of the carnival remained lively and festive.

Fortunately, his injuries did not pose any serious threat to his life.

According to law enforcement officials, an individual was shot on Eastern Parkway near Rochester Avenue at around 5:20 p.m. Initially, the NYPD reported that three people had been shot at the location but later clarified that the other two individuals had been stabbed in the leg while the third person had been slashed in the hand.

Fortunately, everyone involved in the incident is expected to recover fully. The outcome is very positive, and we can all breathe a sigh of relief knowing that there were no fatalities.

According to authorities, at around 4:45 p.m. on Eastern Parkway near Albany Avenue, a 33-year-old man was attacked and slashed on his left arm. Fortunately, the injuries he sustained were not life-threatening. This incident occurred while the parade was ongoing in the same area.

It is currently unclear what the motives behind the action are.

According to authorities, gunfire broke out around 8:50 p.m. near the intersection of Sterling Place and Schenectady Avenue, resulting in the victim sustaining multiple bullet wounds.

According to the police, he was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he was later declared deceased.

The investigation is still ongoing, and no arrests have been made yet.

According to sources, the events that transpired occurred after a peaceful J’Ouvert celebration, which is a pre-dawn festival that marks the start of the Caribbean heritage carnival. In previous years, this celebration has unfortunately been tainted by violent incidents.

As per sources, seven individuals have been taken into custody on charges related to firearms. The NYPD’s Critical Response Team made five of these arrests, while the remaining two were carried out by patrol officers. At this time, further information regarding the arrests is not yet available.

At a recent press conference, representatives from the NYPD revealed that thousands of officers would be in attendance to ensure the safety of the 56th annual festival.

According to John Chell, the NYPD Chief of Patrol, last year’s Labor Day celebrations were not only successful but also one of the safest on record. He expressed his commitment to achieving the same level of success and safety this year as well.

According to Chell, the New York Police Department (NYPD) is set to deploy thousands of officers from various bureaus, including the patrol bureau, detective bureau, community affairs, intelligence, counterterrorism, and more, to work throughout the upcoming weekend.

In a powerful statement, the NYPD official expressed that any individual intending to cause trouble during the community gathering should think twice. The official stated that the community stood together and would not tolerate any misconduct or harm. The police officers would be present and vigilant, ensuring a safe and enjoyable weekend for everyone. Some police officers would be visible, while others may not be, but all would be firm and fair in their actions. The message was clear – the community was united against any negative behaviour, and the police were there to maintain peace and safety.

Prior to the upcoming festivities, the NYPD took proactive measures by sending out letters to 40 gang members in Brooklyn, urging them to maintain good conduct during the events. According to The New York Post, the letters were delivered as cease-fire warnings, serving as a reminder to the recipients to avoid any illegal activities that could potentially harm themselves or others.

Police officials have set up 13 checkpoints along Eastern Parkway for attendees of Monday’s parade, which celebrates the rich heritage and culture of the Caribbean. Anyone attending may be randomly searched as a security precaution.

According to police officials, the department has announced plans to utilize drones during the Labor Day weekend to keep an eye on large outdoor festivities and barbeques that may become unruly. As per reports, these drones will be deployed in order to survey the area and ensure that everything is under control. The move is aimed at maintaining public safety and preventing any potential incidents from occurring during the holiday weekend.

Before officers arrive, the NYPD’s unmanned aircraft are deployed to survey noise complaints and other non-emergency or 311 calls.

Last week, Mayor Eric Adams and Police Commissioner Edward Caban addressed public concerns regarding the use of sci-fi drones in law enforcement. According to their statement, they assured the public that the drones would not be utilized for monitoring individuals and would only serve as an additional resource to enhance law enforcement efforts. They emphasized that the drones would only be used as a force multiplier.

In the previous year, the Mayor acknowledged the success of the law enforcement officials and members of his administration’s Crisis Management Team in ensuring safety during the usually chaotic J’Ouvert celebration.

During a press conference, Adams shared that they made use of every agency’s capabilities to ensure that the celebration remained peaceful. He emphasized that their approach was effective as there was no traditional violence associated with the event.

Last year, Mayor Eric Adams credited the efforts of law enforcement officials and members of his administration’s civilian “Crisis Management Team” for the safety at the event.

In the past, there have been violent incidents related to events, such as the 2015 killing of lawyer Carey Gabay, who was an aide to then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The incident occurred during a festival, where Gabay was caught in the crossfire of a shootout between rival gangs. The tragic event serves as a reminder of the potential dangers that can occur in large-scale gatherings. Recently, steps have been taken to increase security measures and prevent similar incidents from happening again.

According to authorities, last year’s J’Ouvert celebration turned tragic when gunfire erupted, leaving five individuals, including a young child and his mother, injured. The incident was a stark reminder of the violence that can sometimes occur during outdoor festivities.

Despite the cancellation of the official J’Ouvert and West Indian Day events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, enthusiastic participants still gathered in the early hours to celebrate.
