A video of a woman giving a “terrifying” apartment tour has gone viral, shedding light on the harsh reality of hunting for apartments in New York City. The video has captured the attention of many, revealing the difficulties of finding affordable and comfortable living spaces in the city.
On August 13, Vivi (@viviarmacost) took to TikTok to share her experience of going on “three terrifying, expensive apartment tours”. The video has since garnered over 1.6 million views on the platform. Vivi posted the video to help others who may be facing similar challenges in finding their dream apartment. The post includes a link to her TikTok account for those who want to follow her journey.
As the video starts, she looks directly into the camera and says in a voiceover, “Join me as I explore three spine-chilling apartments in New York City. I am currently searching for a studio, and let me tell you, it’s been a nightmare.”
In the video, we witness Vivi’s adventure as she explores three distinct apartments located in Manhattan, which is widely known as the priciest borough in the city. Initially, Vivi takes us to a unit situated in the Lower East Side. She admits that she was skeptical about the place and anticipated it to be “gross,” but decided to visit regardless as there was no broker’s fee mentioned online. However, upon reaching there, Vivi asserts that she was informed of a staggering “$4,000 broker’s fee.”
In the video clip, she expressed her thoughts on the pricing of the one-bedroom apartment, stating that it was well-priced, however, she could tell that it was actually a studio with a fake wall. She also mentioned that the absence of a laundry machine was a downside and that living alone as a girl on the Lower East Side was not the safest option.
During the next apartment viewing, Vivi was taken to one of the sought-after neighborhoods in Manhattan, Chelsea. The apartment was a small studio, but Vivi was immediately drawn to it. The video footage showcased a compact room with a kitchen stove and sink integrated into one of the walls and a window at the end of the room. Despite its size, Vivi was impressed and commented, “This may be a tiny space, but I absolutely love it. And the location is unbeatable.”
In her own words, she shared, “I’ve been actively negotiating lately and I’ve had some success. One apartment even gave me a $50 discount per month. However, it was disheartening to discover that the second listing I was interested in was no longer available as soon as I left the premises.”
When Vivi was searching for an apartment, the third one she visited came with a broker’s fee of $1,000. The apartment was located in Chelsea and was the largest studio she had ever seen. However, when she applied for the listing, she was unhappy to discover that it was a 9-month lease and still required her to pay a broker’s fee.
Numerous commenters pointed out that the featured listings bore a striking resemblance to jail cells rather than upscale apartments.
A comment left by a viewer stated, “These resemble jail cells.” Another person added, “I apologize, but this appears to be prison-like.”
Someone else inquired, “Is New York truly worth enduring this kind of living conditions? It seems like even a jail cell would be a more desirable option.”
One viewer expressed their confusion by saying, “I don’t know why people think anything in NY is worth living in THIS.” Another viewer was equally puzzled, stating, “I’m confused that she’s calling that last one beautiful. Do people really want to live in NY that badly?”
During her apartment hunt in Manhattan’s Chinatown area, Vivi was taken aback by the metal bars on the outside of every window of the apartments she visited. Even though it’s a common feature in the area, the sight left her viewers in shock.
