Task force concludes vehicle pursuit, closing I-465 shortly before crash; suspect remains at large

On Tuesday afternoon, a task force focused on firearms decided to abandon their pursuit of a car carrying four armed individuals after the vehicle turned onto I-465.

According to officials, shortly after, the car met with an accident on the westbound side of I-465, causing a temporary closure just beyond the I-65 intersection on the southern outskirts of Indianapolis.

According to Sgt. Tony Patterson from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the driver of the vehicle involved in the incident continued driving recklessly on 465, despite concerns for public safety and ongoing construction in the area. This led to a collision with another vehicle that was occupied by innocent bystanders. Patterson shared this information with the media in a statement.

Police had to temporarily shut down the interstate for a little over an hour to investigate the situation. During that time, they arrested three out of the four individuals who were in the car, searched the surrounding area for the fourth person who had fled the scene, and managed to locate a machine gun conversion device that was found in the vehicle.

According to Patterson, the suspect that the police has been searching for is still on the loose as of Tuesday night. However, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) has no reason to believe that the suspect is currently in the nearby vicinity. Therefore, there is no immediate danger to the public.

At around 2:20 p.m. on Tuesday, the initial call for medics was made following the crash. The Indiana Department of Transportation had initially reported a “roadway hazard,” which led to the closure of I-465 westbound between South Keystone and Madison avenues.

The suspect had been under investigation by the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force prior to the dispatch. The pursuit took place when the suspect got into a vehicle with three other individuals, and the location where this occurred has not been disclosed by the police.

The identity of the suspect or any individual who was apprehended at the crash scene has not been disclosed by IMPD to the public.

Upon arriving at Salem Square following the accident, News 8 photographer David Smith observed a considerable number of police and emergency vehicles in the area. Salem Square is a residential neighborhood located to the northwest of the South Keystone Avenue overpass for I-465.

An unnamed child suffered minor injuries after being hit by the suspects’ vehicle. Medical attention was provided to the child at the site of the accident.
