South Florida communities feel the impact of the Maine mass shooting

The recent mass shooting in Maine has brought back painful memories for South Florida communities who have also experienced the tragedy of a massacre. The incident has struck a chord with them, and they empathize with the victims and their families. It’s a sad reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence and the urgent need for measures to prevent such incidents from happening again.

In a recent interview, CBS News Miami spoke with two active members of the Broward chapter of the League of Women Voters. The focus of their work centers on finding effective solutions to the issue of gun violence.

Barbara Markley is a strong advocate for gun safety and has dedicated herself to ensuring that firearms are handled responsibly. A noteworthy effort she has undertaken is giving away thousands of free gun locks that she receives from the V.A. This is a commendable initiative that helps prevent accidents and tragedies caused by the improper handling of guns, and it is a testament to Barbara’s commitment to promoting gun safety.

As per her statement, a significant sixty percent of gun-related fatalities are attributed to self-inflicted harm. Tragically, firearms have now surpassed all other causes of death among children and teenagers.

In her opinion, gun locks have the potential to save lives.

Julie Morrall is deeply committed to the cause of sensible gun reform. As a gun owner herself, she understands the importance of responsible gun ownership. Her advocacy was further strengthened when she found herself at the scene of the tragic shooting incident at Terminal 2 of FLL in 2017, where five innocent lives were lost due to gun violence. Julie’s personal experience has fuelled her resolve to work towards creating a safer and more secure environment for all, without compromising the rights of responsible gun owners.

After the Parkland massacre, Florida implemented gun reform measures that included raising the age limit for long gun purchases and implementing red flag warnings. However, current efforts in the Florida legislature to scale back these laws have raised concerns. The speaker is worried about the potential consequences of such actions and the impact they could have on public safety.

As per her suggestion, it’s crucial to be aware of the stance of the candidates you are going to vote for, especially if those issues hold significant importance for you.
