Missouri Man Allegedly Drives at Over 90 MPH on His Way to Pumpkin Patch, Resulting in the Death of Girlfriend and Toddler

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (TCD) – Over the weekend, a tragic incident occurred where a 25-year-old man reportedly drove his vehicle at more than 90 mph and collided with another car resulting in the death of his girlfriend and 2-year-old daughter.

According to an announcement made by the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday, October 18th, Derrius Tolson has been charged with two counts of first-degree involuntary manslaughter in relation to the fatal accident.

As per the probable cause statement, on the 14th of October, Saturday, Tolson was thrown out of his Jeep after running a red light at the southbound I-435 exit ramp and colliding with a Honda Accord. An officer from the Kansas City Police, who was on patrol duty in the vicinity, had noticed the Jeep and another car zooming past and had observed that they appeared to be engaged in a “chasing or racing” activity. The details of the incident are outlined in the statement.

According to reports, Tolson was driving at an excessive speed of 92 to 94 mph in a 40 mph zone when the collision with the Honda occurred. The impact caused the vehicle to roll over several times, leading to severe damage and injuries.

According to the probable cause statement, Tolson received treatment for his minor injuries at a nearby hospital, while the Honda driver appeared to have remained unharmed.

According to the driver of the Honda, she was on her way home when she passed through the intersection. Suddenly, she heard a loud noise, and when she looked to her right, she saw a car overturning before it collided with her vehicle.

As per the probable cause statement, a witness present at the scene was driving a Penske Ford 350 van when it was hit by a blue Dodge Challenger. The witness recounted that the Dodge Challenger appeared to be racing alongside a Jeep at the time of the collision.

According to reports, Tolson told detectives that he was on his way to pick pumpkins with his girlfriend and daughter when the accident occurred. He mentioned that he had dropped off his stepdaughter at her father’s house about an hour before the incident happened.

As they made their way through Blue Ridge Boulevard and Bannister Road, Tolson, along with his girlfriend and daughter, stumbled upon a Chrysler 300 that had no license plate and tinted windows.

According to Tolson, the operator of the Chrysler vehicle had revved the engine at an intersection. Once the traffic signal turned green, Tolson reportedly sensed that the Chrysler was driving too close to him and pacing him.

According to the probable cause statement, Tolson tried to escape the Chrysler by accelerating his Jeep to about 60 or 65 mph. He wasn’t sure if the Chrysler had hit his vehicle. However, Tolson remembers his Jeep abruptly flipping over.
