According to authorities, a man was apprehended after attempting to flee from the police while transporting cocaine and marijuana in his car in Marion Township, Pennsylvania. The suspect was eventually subdued with a taser and taken into custody.
According to Trooper Shane Eichelberger, Tony Robert Jones, a 34-year-old from Johnstown, denied smoking marijuana and claimed there was nothing in his vehicle when he was pulled over while heading west on I-80 in Centre County on Sept. 14.
According to the affidavit, the dark window tint on the Nissan sedan drew the attention of the authorities. As they approached the vehicle, troopers reported detecting the smell of marijuana. In addition, they found that Jones had multiple cell phones and air fresheners in the car.
According to the trooper, Jones was searched for weapons, but none were found. However, a hefty sum of cash, amounting to over a thousand dollars, was discovered in his pocket.
Upon investigation, it was discovered that Jones had a criminal record which included charges of “persons not to possess a firearm” and “carrying a firearm without a permit” in Cambria County in April of the current year. In addition to this, he was found to have been involved in several weapon and drug-related offenses in New York, as stated by the investigators.
According to the complaint, Eichelberger became aware that Jones was journeying from Queens, NY, to Johnstown, Pa. When the police requested to search the vehicle, Eichelberger refused. The police then informed him that they would be summoning a narcotics K9 unit. At this point, Jones made a dash for the passenger side of the vehicle, attempting to re-enter the car, as per the investigators.
According to the report, the police tried to stop Jones and deployed a taser, hitting him twice. Despite this, Jones managed to break away from the trooper and fled into the woods. He then jumped over a wired fence, but was tased two more times before being taken into custody.
As per the troopers, while attempting to take Jones into custody, one of the troopers broke his finger. Jones was then read his Miranda rights and questioned about any drugs present in the vehicle. Jones reportedly admitted to having a significant amount of cocaine in the car. Along with the drugs, he was also found carrying $1,813 in cash.
According to reports, Jones supposedly admitted to having a pound of marijuana and a kilo of cocaine in his vehicle.
After the drug discovery, Jones faced more trouble. According to Eichelberger’s report, while attempting to escape, Jones’ car was accidentally put in neutral and drifted into the patrol vehicle.
Jones was accused of a series of serious charges, including first-degree felony for knowingly possessing property that was obtained through an illegal act, aggravated assault, evading arrest, resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to distribute, as well as the use or possession of drug paraphernalia. Additionally, Jones was also charged with minor offenses such as following too closely and improper sun screening.
During a preliminary arraignment, Judge Gregory Koehle refused to grant Jones bail.
