Death of 39-Year-Old Inmate Reported at Justice Center Jail in Syracuse Today

According to Sheriff Toby Shelley, a 39-year-old man passed away in the Justice Center jail earlier today. Sadly, this marks the third inmate death at the facility so far this year.

According to Shelley, Giles Gerhardt was discovered unconscious around 1 a.m. after being in police custody for only half a day.

According to Shelley, the cause of Gerhardt’s death was not disclosed. However, it was known that he had a history of addiction to heroin and fentanyl, which he had revealed to the jail staff.

According to Shelley, Gerhardt was taken into custody due to four misdemeanor charges against him, which included possession of a controlled substance, trespassing, assault, and obstruction of breathing.

According to jail officials, a man aged 43 passed away due to natural causes at the jail in April. Similarly, in March, a 40-year-old man took his own life while in custody.
