After Alabama’s Loss, ESPN College Football Rankings Leave Fans Perplexed

Following their defeat to Texas with a score of 34-24 in Week 2, Alabama is now out of the top rankings in college football. This news comes after the most recent release of updated rankings. Tim Tebow even had a message for Alabama fans after their loss.

After Alabama’s loss, the AP Top-25 and USA TODAY Coaches Poll ranked them at No. 10. However, ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) has a different view and still places the Crimson Tide at No.1 in college football.

It’s interesting to note that despite having a record of 1-1, Alabama has been ranked as the top team according to the FPI. On the other hand, Texas, with a record of 2-0, is down at No. 6. It’s unclear how the FPI, which is meant to predict team strength, arrived at this conclusion. What’s even more surprising is that the FPI has placed Michigan, a team that’s ranked No. 2 in both the AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll, at a lowly No. 10.

The Complete List of Top Ten:

  1. Alabama (1-1)
  2. Ohio State (2-0)
  3. Georgia (2-0)
  4. USC (3-0)
  5. Florida State (2-0)
  6. Texas (2-0)
  7. Penn State (2-0)
  8. Oklahoma (2-0)
  9. Notre Dame (3-0)
  10. Michigan (2-0)

As I examine this, a few rankings stand out as perplexing to me. For instance, Alabama being ranked at No. 1, Georgia at No. 3, Texas at No. 6, Michigan at No. 10, and the complete omission of Colorado.

As expected, the bizarre rankings of college football teams caused quite a stir among fans on social media. It’s safe to say that I’m not the only one who was taken aback by the unexpected results. People were quick to voice their opinions and share their reactions to the rankings.

Jeff Sentell, a Georgia Bulldogs reporter, expressed his skepticism about a certain topic on Twitter by saying, “This gives me a headache. Going to need to see the math on this one.”

Another comment seen regarding ESPN FPI is that it is the “absolute worst computer metric” around.

A fan left a comment stating that the person who created the list is either still under the influence of alcohol, a supporter of Alabama football or perhaps both.

The ESPN FPI has been widely criticized as being the worst metric in the history of organized sports. There are many who believe that it is simply the dumbest computer program ever written.
