A trans woman was allegedly assaulted in a subway station and car in a hate crime. The victim was groped, slapped and punched by a 22-year-old Brooklyn man. She had to be treated for a broken nose at Lennox Hill Hospital. Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez stated that every person in the city deserves to safely use the subway, irrespective of their gender identity or expression.
The defendant, Ian Williams, 22, of Bed-Stuy, was arraigned on an indictment in which he is charged with third-degree assault as a hate crime, third-degree assault, third-degree menacing as a hate crime, forcible touching and other related counts. Williams was ordered to be held on $10,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond and to return to court on November 1, 2023.
If convicted of the top count, he is facing a maximum sentence of up to four years. The incident took place on August 17, 2023, at 1:00 pm, when Williams made a sexually suggestive gesture at the victim and then grabbed her buttocks. When confronted, he threatened her and called her a homophobic slur. Gonzalez added that they would continue to vigorously prosecute violent people and defend the rights of every member of Brooklyn’s LGBTQ community.
As per reports, the accused and the victim boarded the J-train heading towards Manhattan. The victim confronted the accused about his inappropriate behavior and the racial slur he used. It is alleged that the accused responded by slapping and repeatedly punching the victim before throwing her to the ground. Fortunately, bystanders intervened and pulled the accused away, after which he shifted to another train car.
