At the Crawford County Judicial Center, an extradition hearing is scheduled for today for a Pennsylvania woman and her mom accused of killing an Alabama woman in 2021.
Mary Elizabeth Isbell, 21, was pushed down a cliff to her death in late 2021, authorities say, and Jessie Eden Kelly, 21, is wanted in her death. The remains of Isbell were discovered in Little River Canyon National Park near Fort Payne last week, 18 months after she went missing.
Kelly was arrested on June 25 on a felony charge of arresting before requisition.
Kelly’s extradition was first sought by Missouri, where she faces felony burglary and stealing charges in Douglas County, according to Crawford County District Attorney Paula DiGiacomo.
Kelly’s extradition was subsequently sought by authorities from DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office in Fort Payne.
It would be Kelly’s first time going back to Alabama since her mother, Loretta Kay Carr, was arrested on June 25 by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team.
In the same case as her daughter, Carr faces a capital murder charge. Carr is a former Pennsylvania resident, according to a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office.
They’re charged with murder after Isbell’s ex-husband reported her missing to Hartselle police on Dec. 27, 2021, when she was 37 years old.
As local authorities pursued several leads over the past 18 months without success, Isbell remained missing, her fate unknown, according to a statement from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.
Carr and Kelly were arrested soon after a tip on June 20.
In a statement, the Alabama Department of Forensic Science said Isbell’s remains were discovered on June 28 and identified on June 30, her 39th birthday.
Several news reports say Carr “intentionally caused” Isbell’s death by “pushing her off a cliff” in October 2021, according to court records.
