Vocal, in partnership with the Alabama Crime Victims Compensation Commission, has announced a memorial service for their late founder, Miriam Shehane, to be held a week from Wednesday in Montgomery, Alabama.
During the tribute, Shehane will be remembered for her remarkable contributions to victims’ rights and services in Alabama. She was known for her personal dedication to countless survivors and had served both VOCAL and the Alabama Crime Victims Compensation Commission for over four decades. Her legacy and tremendous impact on the community will be celebrated.
After the passing of the founder of VOCAL, Wanda Miller, the Executive Director of the organization, paid tribute to her. Miller described her as a powerful force, a mother who had faced more than her fair share of tragedy, but instead of letting it defeat her, she used it to create a positive impact that would shine in Alabama forever. Shehane founded VOCAL in 1982, driven by her commitment to establish crime victims’ rights in the state, following the murder of her daughter Quenette in 1976.
Shehane’s memorial service is scheduled on July 10 at 10 a.m. at the RSA Alabama Activity Center located at 201 Dexter Avenue in Montgomery. The parking area at the Activity Center deck, situated across the street from the venue, will be accessible on the day of the event without any cost.
After the service, there will be refreshments available for the attendees. Instead of flowers, Shehane’s family respectfully requests donations to be made in Miriam’s memory to VOCAL, Clio Baptist Church, or the American Cancer Society.
