David Glen Swift, a 55-year-old man, currently stands accused of stalking his second spouse in Jefferson County, Alabama. He is currently on bond waiting for a murder trial in Tennessee related to his first wife’s death. Following the end of his second marriage, Swift has landed back in his home state in an Alabama jail.
According to law enforcement in Alabama’s Jefferson County, Swift was taken into custody last Friday and faces a serious stalking charge. Records from the Jefferson County jail, analyzed by Law&Crime, indicate the alleged stalking incident took place on July 9th.
As reported by AL.com, law enforcement officials share that their investigation revealed Swift had been silently trailing his ex-spouse for a considerable time, even resorting to parking outside her residence at late hours of the night and early morning.
“I’m very pleased with the hard work that our deputies put into helping this victim,’’ JCSO Lt. Joni Money told the online news outlet. “She was not even aware of the extent to which she was being followed.”
When Law&Crime attempted to reach JCSO for more information regarding the stalking charges, they received no immediate response.
Swift’s romantic relationships have significantly affected his past decade. His second wife filed for divorce in June 2022, with the official dissolution being declared by the court in March of the current year.
Swift’s arrest for his first wife’s murder occurred while leaving his divorce lawyer’s office in August 2022, as per Law&Crime’s earlier reports.
At 44 years old, Swift’s first wife, Karen disappeared in October 2011 after leaving a Halloween party at The Farms’ Dyersburg Country Club. Swift had informed the police that Karen left the gathering earlier than usual to fetch one of their four daughters from a sleepover because she wasn’t feeling well. The following morning, Swift reported Karen as missing.
On the same day, law enforcement discovered Karen’s 2004 Nissan Murano some distance away from their home. Notably, the car had one shredded tire, her handbag was not found, but her Halloween outfit remained in the vehicle.
Nearly six weeks later, Karen’s partially clothed dead body was discovered by hunters in a cemetery near the family’s residence, hidden under rotting kudzu vines. Karen’s body bore the evidence of a violent death, with several fractures and the cause of death determined as blunt force trauma to the head.
Swift later relocated to Alabama and married his second wife in Mobile in 2016. In 2019, prosecutors began to look into Karen’s murder.
“I really do appreciate the patience of the citizens of Dyer County while we investigated this terrible crime,” Dyer County Sheriff Jeff Box said when David Swift was arrested in the Yellowhammer State last summer, in comments reported by Jackson, Tennessee-based ABC/CBS affiliate WBBJ. “It took nearly 11 years but we can now go through the process of extraditing Swift back to Dyer County to face this charge at a trial.”
As of now, Swift remains in custody for the aforementioned stalking charge. The District 29 District Attorney’s Office, responsible for Dyer and Lake counties in Tennessee, informed Law&Crime that a request to cancel Swift’s pretrial bond has been submitted. A formal hearing on this issue is scheduled for August 11.
