According to court documents, Joran van der Sloot’s motion for an extension of the trial and pretrial deadlines has been granted by a judge. This development was reported by WBRC, a news outlet based in Birmingham, Ala.
On Monday afternoon, Joran van der Sloot’s defense team filed a request for a 45-day extension to prepare for trial. This was the deadline for them to submit pretrial motions.
As per the motion, van der Sloot has appealed for more time to go through the discovery, assess the case, and seek advice from his legal counsel. This marks his second plea for an extension.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Gray M. Borden has granted an extension on Tuesday.
According to Borden, the defendant must be given ample time to prepare his defense and make an informed decision on whether to enter a guilty plea or go to trial. Therefore, the court finds that it is in the best interest of justice to extend the pretrial deadlines and grant a continuance, even though it may not be in the best interest of the public and the defendant’s right to a speedy trial.
According to recent updates, the deadline for pretrial motions has been pushed to November 13th.
According to recent reports, the individual in question is facing serious charges of federal wire fraud and extortion. Despite being extradited earlier this year, he has maintained his innocence and pleaded not guilty to the federal counts. In fact, he even went through the trouble of hiring a legal team to defend him in court.
According to recent reports, Joran van der Sloot, who is believed to be the main suspect in the case of Natalee Holloway’s disappearance in 2005, is facing charges of attempting to extort money from Natalee’s mother. The alleged extortion was supposedly in exchange for disclosing the location of Natalee’s remains.
The charges of extortion and wire fraud are the only crimes that connect the Dutch citizen to Natalee Holloway’s disappearance on the Caribbean island of Aruba. Although he is not on trial for harming Holloway, her unsolved case continues to be a mystery. Holloway was only 18 years old when she vanished during a high school graduation trip with her friends. She was last seen leaving a bar with van der Sloot, who was a student at an international school on the island where he spent his childhood.
After admitting to the killing of a Peruvian woman in 2010, Van der Sloot was extradited to the United States from Peru, where he is currently serving a 28-year sentence. According to the report, he has been extradited to face charges related to a different crime committed in the United States.
