As the First Alert Weather Day continues, we have got you covered with some helpful tips for setting the thermostat in your home. These tips will not only help you stay cool but also save money on your electricity bill.
As we endure the harsh temperatures of the outdoors this week, we inevitably long for the comfort of our cool and cozy homes. However, the definition of a “nice” and “cool” home can vary from person to person. Have you heard of the 20-degree rule?
According to Anthony Cook from Alabama Power, the rule is based on industry standards for the design of air conditioning units. Typically, your AC unit can lower the temperature in your home by around 20 degrees from the outside temperature. For instance, if it’s 100 degrees outside, most homes can only get down to around 80 degrees.
Keep this in mind when adjusting your thermostat whether you’re at home or away.
According to Cook, lowering your thermostat may not be very effective in reducing your energy bill. In fact, it could end up costing you more money in the long term.
“When you set the temperature, the system will continue to run until it reaches that point. However, it won’t go beyond that 20-degree mark, resulting in energy wastage and unnecessary expenses.”
When the temperature rises, your AC unit has to work harder to keep your home cool and comfortable. Alabama Power suggests a few helpful tips such as regularly changing air filters to ensure your unit is running at optimal efficiency. Additionally, turning on the fans in your home can help circulate the air and make your space feel cooler without increasing energy consumption.
