Effective immediately, the Alabama Forestry Commission (AFC) has announced a statewide Fire Alert, which will impose restrictions on permits for outdoor burning. It is important to note that burning fields, grasslands, or woodlands without a permit during this time may result in prosecution for committing a Class B misdemeanor. This Fire Alert has been issued in order to ensure the safety of the community and prevent the spread of fires.
Due to the ongoing drought and the persistent absence of rain, a burning restriction is being implemented. Additionally, the likelihood of fuel ignition is alarmingly high. The weekend forecast also indicates windy conditions with gusts ranging from 15-30 mph and relative humidities under 20 percent. These factors have led to a grave risk of fires that can easily spiral out of control, causing damage to forests, endangering lives, and destroying property. It is imperative that everyone takes this restriction seriously and refrains from any activities that may result in fires.
The Fire Alert that is currently in place will only be lifted when the State Forester determines that conditions have changed enough to reduce the frequency and occurrence of wildfires. If you come across a wildfire, you can report it by calling the Alabama Forestry Commission at (800) 392-5679.
