Early Sunday morning, a fire ravaged a brownstone in Brooklyn, claiming the lives of three individuals and injuring over a dozen others, according to fire officials in New York City. At approximately 4:30 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to a residence in Crown Heights, according to a New York City Fire Department spokesperson.
“We discovered a three-story structure with heavy fire on three floors,” deputy commander of fire operations John Esposito stated at a news conference.
The fire department reports that three critically ill adults were transported to the hospital, where they were pronounced deceased. The New York Police Department identified the fatalities as Albertha West, 81, Michael West, 58, and Jamiyl West, 33.
Fourteen others, according to Esposito, were injured in the conflagration. A firefighter was also transported to the hospital with a severe injury that was not life-threatening.
“It was an extremely hazardous and difficult fire operation,” Esposito stated.
He stated that the fire required the assistance of 138 first responders and was “time-consuming” to extinguish. The fire department reported that approximately two hours after the initial contact was received, the blaze was contained. BAt present, the fire’s cause remains unknown.
