On Sunday night, an altercation in Upper Manhattan resulted in the death of a man on a scooter, causing grief for his family.
At around 11:45 p.m., a shooting occurred near the intersection of West 185th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue, according to officials.
Authorities reported that a driver stopped next to the 33-year-old victim who was riding a scooter. The situation escalated when the driver exited their car.
Police officials have reported that the two individuals engaged in a physical altercation which escalated into a brawl on the ground. It is currently unclear whether this was a result of a prior disagreement.
Christopher Brooks was declared deceased at Harlem Hospital.
Veronica Shannon, the victim’s aunt, expressed her anguish as she stated that he took her boy away from her, leaving her with the painful reality of never hearing from him again. She spends most of her time in his room, feeling the weight of her heavy heart.
Brooks’ family and friends describe him as a diligent carpenter with a passion for painting homes and a devoted father to his 14-year-old son.
According to his uncle Thomas Shannon, he and his son were best friends and loved each other.
This latest bout of gun violence in Washington Heights did not come as a surprise to its residents.
Jerome Gillespie Jr. said he feels like he always needs to watch his back in the area because there is always something happening and he doesn’t want to be in a suspicious area.
No motive has been determined by the police in the shooting, and no arrests have been made yet.
Since 5 p.m. Sunday, there have been three deadly shootings in New York City. In addition to the shooting we are currently discussing, two people were killed in the Bronx and Brooklyn on Sunday night.
