A young man, who was 21 years old at the time, has been given a 35-year prison sentence for the brutal killing of a transgender woman in her Chicago residence. The incident took place three years ago, and the man in question was found guilty of the crime.
According to court records, Orlando Perez has admitted to committing first-degree murder and has pleaded guilty to the crime. Judge Nicholas Kantas has announced the sentence. As part of the plea deal, prosecutors have dropped several charges against Perez, including multiple counts of first-degree murder, armed robbery, home invasion, and burglary.
When May 31, 2020 came, he was just a student at Bogan High School who happened to visit Selena Reyes-Hernandez’s residence at the 3300 block of West 71st Street.
Over the weekend, the city of Chicago was plunged into chaos as riots and looting erupted in response to the brutal murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer. This tragic event marked the bloodiest weekend that Chicago had seen in a generation, as the city was torn apart by widespread violence and destruction.
During their time spent together at her apartment, Perez posed a question to Reyes-Hernandez, inquiring if she identified as a woman. Unfortunately, when he learned that she was transgender, he became visibly upset and promptly departed from the premises.
According to the Chicago police, a video was discovered on Reyes-Hernandez’s phone that captured Perez washing his hands in her apartment just before the murder took place.
