The next major trial in the Wiregrass is set to begin on Monday in a federal courthouse in Montgomery.
According to the indictment, Darin Starr was paid a 2016 Triumph motorcycle and an undisclosed sum of money by his brother, Jason Starr, who is also charged with Racketeering-Murder, in 2017 to assassinate Jason’s wife and beloved Enterprise instructor, Sara Starr. She was discovered dead from a gunshot wound in her driveway.
Darin was detained on a federal arrest warrant in February 2022 in Hondo, Texas, according to police. He was subsequently turned over to federal agents in Alabama.
Over the last year and a half, this trial has been postponed multiple times. According to the documents, more time is needed to investigate, examine discovery files, and prepare for the trial due to the size of the case and discovery.
In August, Jason requested that certain testimonies be excluded from the trial, notably those of his four children with Sara. They argue that the children’s views on their father’s guilt or any personal hurts are immaterial and would bias the jury.
Jason also wants the evidence of a secretary from the legal firm where he and Sara had their divorce proceedings suppressed, claiming that it would breach attorney-client privilege.
Darin is represented by Jon Carlton Taylor and Aimee Cobb Smith, while Jason is represented by Jim Parkman.
The jury selection phase of the trial is scheduled to begin on Monday, September 11. The actual trial will thereafter last at least two weeks.
