A man, 51, was tragically shot near the West Indian Day Parade route; four others shot, stabbed, or slashed

NEW YORK – On Monday night, a 51-year-old man was shot to death near the West Indian Day Parade route in Crown Heights, only hours after at least four others were shot, stabbed, or slashed during the festivities.

Around 8:50 p.m., the 51-year-old victim was shot outside a small construction site on Sterling Place and Schenectady Avenue.

Officers responding to a 911 call discovered him at the site with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County.

The victim was gunned down in a flurry of bullets, according to witnesses.

“We just heard it—pow, pow, pow,” remarked a woman. “And then we saw people running in all directions, and the police were approaching.” People are racing into buildings, collapsing on the street, and all of stuff.”

The violence occurred hours earlier, about 5:30 p.m., as the parade approached the intersection of Eastern Parkway and Utica Avenue.

According to authorities, a struggle between two groups occurred, resulting in a 19-year-old guy being shot in the buttocks.

A 20-year-old male was also stabbed in the leg, and a 16-year-old boy’s hand was sliced.

All three of them were in the hospital and getting better.

An NYPD officer blocks off an area at the West Indian Day Parade on Sept. 4, 2023.

According to the Daily News, a guy shot himself in the leg during a scuffle at Eastern Parkway and Franklin Avenue at 4:20 p.m. He was admitted to the hospital in stable condition.

A stray gunshot apparently damaged the windshield of an FDNY fire engine stationed on Eastern Parkway at some time. There were no injuries among the firefighters.

Chief of Patrol John Chell of the New York Police Department highlighted the police response to the violence, including the controversial use of drones to watch the celebrations from above.

“We pull this drone out, and we take some cops up here,” Chell explained. “We get around the corner, and we’re much safer now than we were an hour ago.” And that is the objective.”

There were no arrests immediately reported in connection with the violence.
