According to the latest statistics released by the FBI on Monday, there was a 4% decline in active shooter incidents in the U.S. from 2022 to 2023.
According to the FBI’s 2023 Active Shooter Report, there were 48 shootings that were classified as “active shooter incidents,” which is slightly lower than the 50 incidents reported in 2022.
The report states that there was a decrease in the number of fatalities last year, from 313 in 2022 to 244 in 2023. It also reveals that the majority of shooters were male.
According to the FBI, there has been a significant surge in active incidents from 2019 to 2023, with a total of 229 reported cases. This marks an 89% increase from the previous five-year period, indicating a concerning trend in such events.
In October 2023, a gunman opened fire in two locations in the small town of Lewiston, Maine, resulting in the deadliest active shooting incident of the year. Tragically, 18 people lost their lives in this senseless act of violence.
Out of all the states, California experienced the highest number of active shooting incidents, with a total of eight. The shootings occurred in various locations including open spaces, businesses, and educational institutions.
According to the report, 13 law enforcement officials lost their lives in 12 incidents where law enforcement was involved. The FBI reported that in 58% of these incidents, the shooter had no affiliation with the location of the shooting.
