WBRC FOX6 News is checking in with a local veteran cemetery in Montevallo, Alabama to see how they are faring amidst the rapid filling up of veteran cemeteries across the country.
The Alabama National Cemetery currently spans 54 developed acres, according to the VA. However, there are plans in place to expand the cemetery in the near future.
The cemetery encompasses nearly 480 acres, according to Deborah Kendrick, the Cemetery Director.
Since its establishment in 2007, the cemetery has been the final resting place for approximately 1,100 to 1,200 veterans, as well as their spouses and children, annually. With an abundance of untouched land, Kendrick explains that the cemetery has the capacity to continue burying thousands of individuals each year for the next century.
They are currently working on expanding their burial site to add more acreage.
Kendrick mentioned that the expansion is scheduled to commence in 2027. He stated that they plan to incorporate more casket sites, additional columbarium areas, and inground cremation sites. Kendrick expressed his appreciation for the incredible team he works with, emphasizing their commitment to preserving the location as a national shrine.
According to Kendrick, veterans who are interested in being buried at the Alabama National Cemetery should consider submitting a pre-need eligibility application. Doing so can help alleviate the burden on their loved ones by having plans already in place.
