NYPD reports shots fired as driver evades traffic stop in Brooklyn, injuring officer

In Brooklyn, a police officer was struck by a driver who was allegedly fleeing a traffic stop.

Around 12:45 a.m., the officers opened fire on the vehicle as it quickly fled from the stop at Hegeman Avenue and Van Siclen Avenue in East New York.

The officer received medical attention at the hospital for a minor ankle injury.

According to the NYPD, the driver escaped from the scene in a gray Toyota Highlander with New York license plates.

The SUV was pulled over by the police for a motor vehicle violation.

The officers from the Strategic Response Group unit in Brooklyn were assigned to the case.

Shortly after the initial traffic stop, another driver attempted to make a turn onto Hegeman Avenue from Hendrix Street but ended up colliding with a police SUV. This accident triggered a chain reaction crash.

The police are currently conducting an investigation to determine whether the driver failed to notice the police scene tape that had been placed to cordon off the initial crash site.
