A 22-year-old man has been found guilty of murder and has been sentenced to life in prison for taking the life of another man during a robbery that occurred last year.
In a recent court verdict, Derrious Bernard Daniel, aged 22, was found guilty of the murder of Dustin Scott Parrott in February 2023, as determined by a jury in Coweta County.
Daniel has received a life sentence in prison, with no chance of parole.
According to prosecutors, Parrott and two other men made a trip to Newnan with the intention of selling marijuana. Upon their arrival, Daniel approached their vehicle armed with a gun, with the intention of robbing them.
According to investigators, Daniel attempted to take Parrott’s gun but ended up shooting and killing him when Parrott refused to let go of it.
Daniel faced additional charges of aggravated assault towards the other individuals in the vehicle. He was subsequently sentenced to 20 years in prison for each of these charges.
In the trial, prosecutors presented compelling evidence indicating that Daniel had clear intentions of robbing Parrott. This evidence included text messages and testimonies from witnesses.
According to Coweta District Attorney John Cranford Jr., this incident highlights a recurring issue of young men, some of whom were still teenagers when the crime occurred, engaging in felonies that ultimately led to a loss of life. He emphasizes that there were no completely blameless individuals involved in this case, and everyone has had to face the repercussions of their actions. Cranford further asserts that both parties had the option to refrain from participating in criminal activities on that fateful day. He hopes that this particular case serves as a valuable lesson for all young individuals within the community who may contemplate engaging in similar behavior.
