For years, a disabled woman has been enduring the living conditions of a filthy apartment complex.
During a recent visit, Tyisha Fernandes from Channel 2 had the opportunity to witness the deplorable conditions that exist within her Stonecrest apartment.
During a conversation with property managers at Stonecrest Mills Apartment Complex, Fernandes learned that they have recently taken over the management of the complex. They acknowledged the unfortunate fact that some tenants are currently residing in appalling living conditions.
According to them, they were left with a disastrous situation resembling an overflowing trash dumpster, with broken mailboxes and litter scattered all around.
Dedra Cash has been convinced for months that she has been detecting a moldy odor emanating from behind her air conditioner.
Cash explained that there was no filter inside the pan and someone had placed another pan underneath to catch the water. He expressed his frustration, stating that he had been complaining about this issue for the entire five-and-a-half years he had been living there.
Living on a fixed income, she faces numerous challenges due to being disabled and having multiple illnesses, which greatly restrict her mobility outside of her apartment.
“I discovered rats in my house when one of them chewed a hole in my carpet. It attempted to access another room, and it remains trapped inside. Dealing with this constant invasion has left me feeling exhausted and overwhelmed,” she shared wearily.
Fernandes was met with a sight of overflowing trash, boarded-up windows, broken gates, and scattered furniture as she made her way to Cash’s front door. The condition of the surroundings was so severe that it was difficult for her to reach the entrance.
“I have a son with a disability. He is unable to come and visit me due to the overgrown bushes and other obstacles. I worry that something might enter my house,” she expressed her concerns.
Fernandes entered the leasing office seeking answers from the property managers. However, instead of providing a solution, they directed her to contact the corporate office. At that moment, Cash walked in and informed them that she had already reached out to Channel 2 Action News for assistance. She explained that despite years of complaints, she had not received any resolution.
“I’m at my wit’s end. I’ve had enough of this. It’s frustrating to think that we’re paying so much money and yet we can’t even enjoy a decent and peaceful life,” expressed Cash.
According to her, she is currently paying $1,400 per month for rent. Initially, when she moved in, her rent was only $775.
