Former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan (R) made a surprising announcement on Monday, declaring his support for President Biden in the upcoming November election. In doing so, he also took a stand against his fellow Republicans who blindly align themselves with former President Trump. Duncan’s decision to back Biden demonstrates his willingness to break from the party line and prioritize his own convictions over political loyalty.
In a recent op-ed published in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Duncan expressed his disappointment in witnessing a growing number of Republicans aligning themselves with Trump.
According to him, he has no other option but to back Biden instead of the expected Republican candidate. He went on to describe the latter as “a man who has rendered himself ineligible due to his behavior and personal qualities.”
“But in order for the GOP to rebuild, we must move forward from the Trump era. As a conservative Republican who is not filled with anger, I find myself with no other option but to vote for Biden. However, I also believe in the importance of electing GOP congressional majorities to counterbalance his potential second-term legislative agenda and provide a necessary check and balance,” expressed Duncan.
Duncan cited Trump’s New York hush money case as one of the factors behind his decision not to support him. He also criticized Trump for promoting baseless conspiracy theories that contributed to the tragic events of January 6, 2021.
Duncan, once considered a potential third-party presidential candidate, criticized Trump and his allies for their involvement in fake elector schemes following the 2020 election.
According to Duncan, there are some individuals who identify as “reluctant Trump supporters” and claim that they support Trump due to policy disagreements with Biden or the perceived chaos on college campuses. However, Duncan challenges these arguments by highlighting that Trump’s final year in office was far from peaceful.
In a recent statement, Duncan expressed his firm belief that Trump’s true character has been revealed and that it is essential to take his actions and words at face value. Duncan’s opinion is rooted in the belief that expecting a change in behavior from a 77-year-old individual is highly unlikely.
In his concluding remarks, he mentioned that he has been a member of the Republican Party for his entire life but will still cast his vote for Biden.
“I have been a member of the GOP my whole life, unlike Trump. In this upcoming November, I will be casting my vote for a person who may have different policy views from mine, but who I believe is a decent individual. In contrast, Trump is a criminal defendant who lacks a moral compass,” he expressed.
Duncan had been suggested as a potential candidate for No Labels, a political organization that aimed to promote a bipartisan approach. However, in March, he made the decision to remove himself from consideration for the No Labels ticket.
Last month, No Labels made an announcement stating that they will not be pursuing a unity ticket due to their inability to find a suitable candidate.
