The Democratic presidential primary took place in Puerto Rico on Sunday, with a total of 55 delegates at stake.
According to ABC News, President Joe Biden is projected to be the winner.
He secured the party’s 2024 nomination earlier this year as he was the sole major candidate in the running.
The voting period took place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., allowing individuals to cast their votes during this time.
In order to participate in the Democratic Party’s race, voters in the territory must have declared themselves as Democrats, despite the fact that open primaries are held.
Teritory’s significance
Puerto Rico, as a U.S. territory rather than a state, does not partake in presidential general elections. However, it does play a role in determining the candidates nominated by the political parties.
Former President Donald Trump emerged victorious in Puerto Rico’s 2024 Republican primary, which took place earlier this month.
In the 2020 primary, Joe Biden emerged victorious over Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, receiving an impressive 56% of the vote.
In the 2016 GOP primary, Florida Senator Marco Rubio emerged victorious in the territory, securing 70% of the vote and surpassing then-candidate Trump.
